MEMBER NEWS: Two-Day Recycling Event Draws Huge Crowd

Submitted by Marc Peterson, IT Alumni Association BOA member & CCITA President

The Beginnings

Scott Denton, a board member of the Century College Information Technology Association (CCITA) suggested doing an electronics recycling event as a way for our group to give back to the college and community.  Toby Lillibridge, a CCITA board member went to countless meetings and spent many hours planning to make sure this event would happen. During our six weeks of planning (and support from the Century College faculty and administration) we expected to fill one to two semis of stuff over the two-day period. The event would be open to the community and students of Century College and there was no charge to drop items off unless they contained Freon.

SURVEY – FOOD – NO FOOD – PAY FOR FOOD?

Please help us decide how important food is to the events we hold.

Fill out our SurveyMonkey poll.

The questions:

  1. Would you attend if food was NOT served?
  2. Would you attend if a SNACK was served?
  3. Would you PAY $5.00 for an entrée, cookie and drink? (Or similar)

GLEANINGS

From the October event

As we go through the evaluations from each event, there are certain themes that keep popping up.

One, that at first baffled us, was that one or two people would indicate they left with less knowledge in a subject than they entered with. We have come to realize that when someone indicates that, it is a mind-opening experience for them, and they realize they don’t know as much about a subject as they thought they did. Good for them; that awareness will help them conquer a subject and grow professionally.

ABOUT EVENT REGISTRATION

1: You MUST pre-register to attend.
2: We need to order food, so in future, registration will close 2 days prior to an event date.

3: Sometimes the number of seats is limited, so register early.

4: Respect your commitment – if you register, show up. If things have changed, let us know so your seat or meal can be given to someone else.

WHY IS PROFESSIONALISM IMPORTANT?

Professional behavior allows you to flourish in your career. Recognizing, understanding, and using the attributes of a Professional set you apart from others.  Professionalism also provides a foundation for effective communication and performance.  It is an aspirational mindset and not everyone realizes it is the differentiator between those who succeed and those who do not.
